AUBURN – Ben Randall converted a pass from Alex Parker with 6:48 remaining in overtime to lift St. Dom’s to a 6-5 victory over Thornton in a boys’ hockey game Thursday.
Thornton (7-5) built a 3-1 advantage in the first period on goals by Chris Stazio, Brad Duranceau and Travis Diden. The Saints (7-4) received a goal from Nate Bergeron to stay in contention.
Alex and Casey Parker put St. Dom’s back in the hunt with two goals early in the second period. Diden fired back for Thornton and the two squads were within one goal headed into the third frame.
Randall and Alex Parker finished with two goals for the Saints, while single tallies from Casey and Bergeron completed the scoring. Shayne Curtis made 21 saves for St. Dom’s to notch the win, while Ben Roux turned aside 33 shots between the pipes for Thornton.
Boys’ basketball
Jay 64, Mt. Abram 49
SALEM – Dylan Stefani channeled a game-high 20 points to lead Jay to a 64-49 victory over Mt. Abram in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Roadrunners (4-11) came up a bit cold in the second quarter as they were outscored 20-9 by Jay. Senior guard Sam Simpson scored 19 points for Mt. Abram.
The Tigers went 18-for-27 from the line, while Mt. Abram secured a sluggish 5-of-11 to account for most of the difference in the contest. Kyle Storer contributed 16 points, while Kyle DeMillo pitched in with 11 points for Jay.
Winthrop 53, Monmouth 41
MONMOUTH – Senior forward Zach Farrington drained 14 points as Winthrop stumbled to a 53-41 victory over Monmouth in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Mustangs (2-13) bounded back from a 27-19 halftime lead with a 14-8 run in the third quarter. Senior forward Parker Ferland tossed a game-high 18 points for Monmouth.
The Ramblers (11-4) were sufficiently frightened by Monmouth’s third quarter rally, responding with an 18-8 scoring run of their own in the fourth quarter to notch the win. Andrew Smithgall contributed 11 points for Winthrop.
Dirigo 68, Telstar 36
BETHEL – Thomas Knight led a trio of players in double figures as Dirigo scrambled to a 68-36 romp over Telstar in MVC boy’s basketball matchup Thursday.
Knight led the undefeated Cougars (15-0) with 16 points, while Tyler Chiasson tallied 12 and Kyle Hutchinson added 10.
The Rebels (4-11) were paced by Dan Vaughn with 10 points, while Joel Putnaqm chipped in with eight.
Girls’ basketball
Dirigo 47, Telstar 26
BETHEL – Jane Hebert tossed in the game-high 12 points and Dirigo held Telstar to single-digit scoring for all four quarters as the Cougars glided to a 47-26 victory in a girls’ basketball game Thursday.
Dirigo (9-5) jumped to a 32-14 halftime lead after erupting for 19 points in the second quarter.
For Telstar, Brianna Douglass, Emma Davis and Cheyanne Day each scored eight points.
Winthrop 44, Monmouth 39
MONMOUTH – Anna Smithgall poured in 10 points and Nikki Scott added eight as Winthrop hustled to a 44-39 victory over Monnouth in a MVC girl’s basketball matchup Thursday evening.
The Ramblers (9-6) held a slim two-point lead at the break, then outscored their opponent by four in the third to create a little breathing room.
The Mustangs (2-13) were paced by Bethany Neal and Alyssa Morin with 14 points each.
NYA 50, Gould 37
BETHEL – Hillary Keach drained 18 points to lead North Yarmouth Academy to a 50-37 victory over Gould in girls’ basketball action Thursday.
The Panthers pounced to a 28-16 hafltime lead. Katherine Merrill chipped in with 11 points for North Yarmouth Academy.
The Huskies (6-9) stepped it up in the second half, but only managed to stop the bleeding, not reverse their fortunes.
Senior guard Michaela Cummings notched a team-high 16 points, while Michelle Kravitz collected 15 points in the losing effort.
Girls’ hockey
Lewiston 6, Winthrop 0
KENTS HILL – Marisa Zamrock netted a pair of goals Thursday as Lewiston skated to a 6-0 rout over Winthrop in girls’ hockey action.
Courtney Vallee, Bianca Langelier, Emily Cloutier and Mariah Conway also tallied for the Blue Devils (14-1-2) to complete the scoring. Steffanie Belanger and Sarah Turner combined for 14 saves to preserve the shutout.
Ashley Marcellino turned aside 21 shots between the pipes for Winthrop.
