JAY – The derailment of at least two railroad cars Wednesday near the Crash Road crossing was not enough to launch a formal investigation by the Federal Railroad Administration, spokesman Rob Kulat said Friday.

A Pan Am Railways train was heading south on the Rumford railroad spur when two freight cars rolled over, one leaned, and two others may have derailed at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jay police officer Steve Wilkinson previously said.

The paper products they were hauling were not believed to have spilled.

“A derailment of this scale does not meet” the criteria for the Federal Railroad Administration to launch an accident investigation,” Kulat said.

“Additionally, the derailment did not even meet the criteria for Pan Am Railways to immediately notify us of this incident,” he said. “Pan Am, however, is required to submit a report to us within 30 days if damages are in excess of $8,900.”

Railroad company workers were at the scene Friday removing equipment. The two railroad cars were still on their sides in the snow but the remainder of the cars had been removed.

Train wheels rested in the snow near Crash Road and the tracks.

The two remaining cars are expected to be removed next week.

Representatives of the Federal Railroad Administration visited the site Thursday.
