FARMINGTON – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is currently teaching a four-part course on how to grow vegetables in the home garden. Topics to be covered include how to improve soil; choosing the best varieties; how to get more from a garden; how to deal with garden pests; and how to store and process produce, including canning.
Remaining classes will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the following towns on these dates:
Rangeley: Feb. 9 and 23 at the public library.
Phillips: Feb. 3, 10 and 24 at the community center.
Farmington: Feb. 4, 11 and 25 at University of Maine at Farmington in Room 305, Roberts Learning Center.
Kingfield: Feb. 5, 12 and 26 in Webster Hall.
The last class will take place in the summer at all locations. Covered in the class will be storage and processing of produce, including canning.
The cost is $10 and all locations are handicapped accessible. For those unable to attend the classes or would prefer, a self-study course is also available for a cost of $10.
