LEWISTON – Ernest (Bud) Alden Smith passed away unexpectedly at his home Jan. 30, in Lewiston.
Bud was born in Hartland, on July 21, 1944. He graduated from Hartland Academy in 1962. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and stationed in Korea. After leaving the Army, he worked as a master plumber until he retired in 2006. He was married to Marjorie Blanchard on Sept. 17, 1982.
Retirement for him was doing the things he truly enjoyed such as brook fishing and worm digging with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the spring. His summers were spent gardening, four-wheeling, berry picking and fishing for white perch. Summer nights and weekends were with family and friends at barbecues, where it was common to see him on his four-wheeler with a grandkid or two.
Fall was a time for jam and jelly making, canning and time in Sabattus with his best friend for more than 20 years, Carey Davis, but one of Bud’s favorite things was spending time with his great-grandchildren. He often said how lucky and blessed he felt to have the chance to get to know them.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marge; his children, David of Woodstock, Vt., Steven and his wife, Brenda, of Woodstock, Vt., Michael and his wife, Lucie, of Berlin, N.H., and Katrina and her companion, Adam, of Hartland; 10 grandchildren, Casey, Brooke, Zachery, Nicholas, Amanda, Samantha, Rebecca, Brandi, Amber and Erika; four great-grandchildren, Kadence, Caeleb, Jaidyn and, yet to be born, and being named in memory of his great-grandfather, Damien Michael Alden; his sister, Ethel and her husband, Darrel; his brother, Gary and his wife, Susan; and two very special friends, Carey and Sharon Davis.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest F. Smith and Louise Griffin; a brother, James; and a very dear friend, Ruth Davis.
