The Val d’Or Foreurs moved into a tie with the Lewiston Maineiacs for the final playoff spot in the QMJHL with a 4-1 victory over the Maineiacs on Wednesday night at the Centre Air Creebec in Val D’Or.
The win by Val D’Or gives them 37 points on the season to match the Maineiacs for 16th place. Sixteen of the 18 teams in the league qualify for the playoffs.
Matthew Lachaine scored one goal and added two assists for the Foreurs, while Keven Guerette-Charlad scored a pair of goals.
Val d’Or scored once in each of the first two periods before finally wearing down the Maineiacs with consecutive goals in the final period to increase its lead to 4-0 by the 8:07 mark.
Eric Gelinas scored the lone goal for the Maineiacs on a power play at 15:35 in the third period with the outcome already decided. Patrick Cusack earned the assist.
Lewiston goalie Adrien Lemay faced an onslaught in net, but kept his team in the game by stopping 35 of 39 shots. The Maineiacs didn’t keep Foreurs goaltender Raffaele D’Orso too busy, firing only 18 shots during the game.
The Maineiacs face Drummondville for a back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.
