AUGUSTA – The Maine Legislature swore in its newest representative Thursday, Lance Harvell of Farmington.

Harvell, a Republican, won the special election for House District 89 on Tuesday over Dennis Haszko, a Democrat, also of Farmington.

“It’s crazy,” Harvell said of his first day in Augusta.

He was assigned to sit on the State and Local Government Committee, the only committee seat left.

“It is what it is,” Harvell said of his assignment. “When you’re the last one through the door, you get what’s left.”

Harvell said he was pleased but not surprised by his win. He was involved in a pair of close races against former District 89 Rep. Janet Mills, who left the post after being elected Maine attorney general in January.

“No offense to Dennis; he’s a nice guy, but he’s no Janet Mills,” Harvell said.

Cutting state spending will be his top legislative priority, Harvell said.
