It’s Sunday morning, and as you struggle to find a good position in your favorite recliner to read the newspaper, you realize your family is right. Your favorite recliner not only looks like it has seen better days, but it feels like it. No matter how you sit, you just can’t get comfortable in your chair. It is time to shop for a new recliner, and here are some tips for finding the right one.

Before you go shopping for a recliner, you need to decide whether you would like a chair with a lever or one without. Those that operate by lever allow for the chair back and the footrest to operate independently of each other, whereas those that recline according to body weight require the chair back and the footrest to operate simultaneously. Most traditional recliners come with a lever, whereas most contemporary recliners don’t and resemble regular chairs. Other features that may interest you include the ability of the chair to swivel, rock or vibrate.

After you have determined what type of recliner you would like to buy, you should arrange a time when you and your spouse can go shopping for a new chair. When looking at recliners, you and your spouse should both try out the chairs and make certain the chair back and the footrest can accommodate the height of each of you. As you lie back in the chair, the back should recline easily and the footrest should remain firm. If the chair swags or sways in any way, pass on it and move on.

Once you find a recliner that you like, ask the salesperson to turn it over so you can check out its construction. The mechanism that operates the chair should be made of heavy steel, and the upholstery should be attached firmly to the frame, with no gaps or frays. Depending upon where you are shopping, you may buy the recliner as is or customize it to fit your needs. If you are given options, make sure you select durable upholstery in a color that you can live with for a long time. Popular choices include suede or leather in more neutral shades like camel or chocolate.

Many advancements have taken place in the design of recliners over the years, and more are sure to come, including models with built-in iPods and laptop connections. Make sure you do your homework when shopping for a recliner and select the model that will work best for you.
