AUGUSTA – It was time Gary Theriault and Andrew Currier each put their best feet forward on the wrestling mat, but the Mt. Blue wrestlers faced roadblocks in their bid to place in the Class A state meet.
Meanwhile, Noble won the team championship. Defending champions Massabesic was second and Bonny Eagle placed third.
Theriault, who drew a tough draw at 130 ponds with eventual state champion Jake Bager of Noble, was injured in a quarterfinal match and was unable to continue.
”I` expected to place today,” Theriault said, a regional champion. ”Some things are not meant to be. When he shot in, I sprawled, and his head came up and hit my chin. I still have a headache.”
Dalton Groeger of Bonny Eagle won the title.
Currier (135 pounds) lost both of his matches by technical fall and a pin.
”It was a short day for us,” Mt. Blue coach Bob O’Connor said. ”It’s too bad Gary got hurt, he was well prepared for this.”
Matt DelGallo of Gardiner won a third-state crown. The Tiger standout placed fifth in New England last year.
The ability to wrestle back through was imperative and Massabecic closed the gap, trailed by 16.5 entering finals.
”We’ve been chasing Massabesic all year,” Noble coach Kip DeVoll said. ”It was up to us, today. We couldn’t expect help because its not always there.”
Noble clinched the crown when Bryan Anderson won in the 135-pound class.
Joe Eon of Massabesic won a fourth state championship by beating Mark Richardson of Noble. Richardson had beaten Eon 4-3 in the regional final.
Gage Desrosier (103), Peter Gilman (140), D.J. Brackett (112) of Morse, Peter Bonder (152) of Noble and Nate LaVallee (285) of Cape Elizabeth each repeated as state champion.
