BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Hundreds of people are likely still thawing out after taking a dip in the 32.7-degree waters of Lake Champlain in a fundraiser for the Special Olympics.

A total of nearly 700 people took part in Saturday’s Penguin Plunge in Burlington, Newport and North Bennington. Teams raised money from sponsors, then gathered at the water’s edge and charged in.

One of the teams was a group of seven 13-year-old girls from the Essex Middle School, two of them taking the plunge to celebrate their birthdays.

In all, the brave souls raised more than $200,000 for the Special Olympics.
