As we all know, January 20 will forever be known in history as the day the first African-American became president.
What will be in the minds of the Lewiston Middle School students is that they got to watch the president and vice president get sworn in right as it was happening. Most students didn’t even know anything about the President’s inauguration until this election. Now, they’re more informed about exactly what an inauguration is and exactly what happens at the ceremony.
Eighth grader Alex Wilson said, “I thought it was interesting. I’ve never seen an inauguration before.” Seventh graders Nick Burpee and Marcus Talarico both thought that the ceremony was great. Nick said that he really enjoyed President Obama’s speech because after hearing it he knew that Obama “meant business,” and that he really was going to change the country like he said he would. Marcus also really enjoyed Obama’s speech and the overall inauguration. Brianna Laflamme, an eighth grader, thought, “It was inspiring.”
Truly it was. Most of the students will remember that day and President Obama well because they got to witness the historical inauguration live.
