AUGUSTA (AP) – A Chelsea man faces burglary and theft charges after a Kennebec County Sheriff’s deputy found a section of an ATM that was stolen from an Augusta convenience store in the back of his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Benjamin Perry was charged after the deputy pulled him over while responding to a report of a suspicious man early Feb. 3. Police confirmed that the item found was part of the same automated teller machine that was stolen from a Dead River store just after midnight the previous day.

Burglars broke down the front door and stole the ATM, which had been bolted to the store’s floor. A portion of the machine was found near Interstate 295 by Richmond police hours after the theft.

The 31-year-old Perry is also charged with aggravated criminal mischief.
