MERCER — State Police say the death of the driver of a Jeep which swerved into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer truck early this morning was a suicide.
Investigators say it was an intentional act that killed 46-year-old David Leavitt of Belgrade.
The crash closed down busy Route 2 in Mercer for 10 hours until the wreckage could be removed. The driver of the loaded pulp truck — Randy Wentworth, 50, of Abbot — escaped injury, but damage to his big rig will exceed $50,000, a release issued by the Maine Department of Public Safety stated.
Troopers learned that Leavitt had been despondent over the breakup of his marriage and had been talking about suicide in recent days, the release stated.
