ORONO, Maine (AP) – Robert Kennedy, who was one of two finalists for president at Kansas State University, says he’s staying at the University of Maine.

Kennedy has been president at the University of Maine System’s flagship campus since 2005, and he said Tuesday he’s happy to continue to serve in that capacity. He says he believes that more than ever, “UMaine is the state’s best hope for the future of this great state.”

Kennedy and Kirk Schulz, a vice president at Mississippi State University, were finalists after the chancellor at East Carolina University withdrew.

Kansas State is seeking to replace longtime President Jon Wefald. Wefald plans to retire at the end of the academic year after serving 23 years in the post.
