MACHIAS (AP) – A 37-year-old Calais woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $200,000 from the city’s school department.

Tina Moholland entered her plea Tuesday in Washington County Superior Court in Machias. She remains free on bail while awaiting sentencing and could face up to 10 years in prison.

Moholland worked for seven years as a secretary, receptionist and bookkeeper for the Calais Day Treatment Program.

She was charged with stealing $197,020 between 2004 and 2007 from the program by depositing tuition checks sent by participating districts into her own accounts.

State officials ask for traffic study

PORTLAND (AP) – Maine transportation officials are proposing an in-depth study of what it would take to improve traffic in the corridor that stretches from the Maine Turnpike to the town of Gorham.

The Maine Turnpike Authority and the Maine Department of Transportation say the goal is to relieve traffic congestion and improve access to the turnpike, I-295 and the jeport.

Gorham, Westbrook, Scarborough and South Portland – Portland are being asked to join in.

UMaine head says he’s staying put

ORONO (AP)-Robert Kennedy, who was one of two finalists for president at Kansas State University, says he’s staying at the University of Maine.

Kennedy has been president at the University of Maine System’s flagship campus since 2005,

and he said Tuesday he’s happy to continue to serve in that capacity. He says he believes that more than ever, “UMaine is the state’s best hope for the future of this great state.”

Kennedy and Kirk Schulz, a vice president at Mississippi State University, were finalists after the chancellor at East Carolina University withdrew.

Kansas State is seeking to replace longtime President Jon Wefald. Wefald plans to retire at the end of the academic year after serving 23 years in the post.

Officials say the study will take 18 to 24 months to complete and will consider everything from new land-use policies and roadways to bus service, biking, walking and the use of passenger and freight trains.
