This is in response to the letter from Elaine Graham, printed Feb. 13.

She claims that gay marriage would be “chaotic,” and would “destroy Maine’s social order.”

Has she ever noticed the statistics relating to divorce, domestic violence, child abuse and child sexual molestation? Those truly do weaken or destroy the social fabric, and the vast majority of people who engage in those behaviors are heterosexual.

It is difficult to imagine that two men who love each other, living in Greene, could come close to equalling that kind of chaos.

As for the Bible, my reading of it is that there are two major commandments: to love God, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. How can love of any kind be “unrighteous”?

Whatever one’s personal beliefs are about gay marriage, at least it would be important to do enough research to avoid outrageous statements based on no facts whatsoever.
