WEST PARIS – Toivo (Louis) Manninen, 84, of Norway, died Sunday, Feb. 22, in West Paris.

He was born in Gardner, Mass., on June 1, 1924, the son of Otto and Siiri Manninen. He was a graduate of Norwood High School in Norwood, Mass.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army with the rank of staff sergeant. He was involved in the air offensive in the Eastern Mandates in the Western Pacific. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in South Paris.

He enjoyed the Red Sox, Patriots and especially tennis, serving as a tennis official during the Arthur Ashe era.

Surviving are his wife, Alli Manninen of Norway; a daughter, Nancy and her husband, Charles Schotter, of Lincoln, R.I.; two sons, Bruce and his wife, Anita, of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Robert and his wife, Pamela, of Rhode Island; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; cousin, Ellen Autio; and her daughter, Anni Autio.
