Jesus Party hears story about U.S. Dorchester
LEWISTON – The Jesus Party urban youth outreach recently observed the anniversary of the sinking of the U.S. Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. The ministry’s patriotic mentor, Jerry DerBoghosian, shared the story of the four Army chaplains on the ship. All four chaplains – Dutch Reformed, Jewish, Roman Catholic and Methodist – gathered on the deck of the ship and assisted troops by giving away their own life jackets to soldiers who had none. Then, they linked arm in arm and prayed for the safety of others as the ship was sinking.
DerBoghosian was joined by Rick Kimball, president of Men on Fire, an encouragement ministry for Maine men, and his wife Carole Kimball, director of Women Ablaze, a Christian women’s fellowship.
The Kimballs shared their testimonies and provided gospel music for the event. Veterans who may be interested in participating in future patriotic events are welcome. For more information on upcoming patriotic observances, call the Jesus Party at 786-5568.
