AUGUSTA (AP) – A bill aimed at keeping Maine’s night skies dark has won unanimous committee support, enhancing its chances of passage by the House and Senate.

Rep. Jim Schatz’s original bill called for statewide standards for commercial outdoor lighting so light is directed down and not into the night sky. Schatz, a Blue Hill Democrat, said stars are clearly visible across Maine’s sky at night. That’s not the case in many other locations.

As amended by the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee, the bill calls for a study of lighting standards already in effect in municipalities across Maine.

That information, due next year, would help officials as in considering whether to adopt statewide standards.
