The Lewiston Maineiacs surprised the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday with a one-goal, shootout win.
The Olympiques weren’t about to let it happen again Saturday.
Boston Bruins’ prospect Alain Goulet recorded three points and three other Gatineau skaters scored to lift their team to a 5-0 win over visiting Lewiston on Saturday in front of 2,912 at the Robert-Guertin Centre in Gatineau.
“We had a number of players who were not playing at the top of their games,” Maineiacs’ coach Don MacAdam said.
Lewiston survived the first down just 1-0, after starter Peter Delmas – still looking for his 10th win of the season – allowed a softie.
“The first one wasn’t a good goal, I don’t think,” MacAdam said, “but he didn’t let that get him down, and I thought he rebounded well tonight from his last start, despite the score.”
In the second, Gatineau opened fire, letting 12 shots go on Delmas to Lewiston’s six. Three of those got by the Lewiston keeper, two on the power play, and one in the final five seconds of the frame.
Josh McQuade, Nicolas Boyer and Jean-Philip Chabot scored the Olympiques’ goals in the second.
Goulet capped the scoring in the third with his second of the night, just 2:52 in.
The Maineiacs remain at 44 points on the season, and still in position to make the playoffs – for now. Val d’Or and Baie-Comeau played against each other later Saturday night, while Halifax was idle.
Those four teams are battling for the league’s final two playoff spots.
The Maineiacs return to action Sunday afternoon against Montreal in Verdun, and finish the seaosn at home with four games over 10 days.
