RUMFORD – Mother and son mushers Rhonda and Terran Welcome of Glass Hill Kennels of Guilford will offer dog sled rides as part of Black Mountain’s Winter Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7.

Rhonda has more than 20 years of mushing experience and Terran rode a sled at just 3 days old. Terran went on to become the one-dog state champion.

Four to six dogs will pull the sled, reaching speeds of up to 12 miles an hour depending on temperature and snow conditions. The sleds can carry two adults and up to four children, depending on weight and trail conditions.

The athletic dogs are an important part of the Welcome family. Their team is made up of retired competitive sled dogs and house pets. Rhonda calls them a “motley crew.”

Tickets will be $5.

Winter Fest will be celebrated Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8. For details and the complete Winter Fest schedule, visit www.skiblackmountain.org or call Black Mountain at 364-8977.
