AUGUSTA (AP) – A bill to address high-speed police chases in Maine has been killed after lawmakers determined that police already have sufficient oversight and training on the tactic.
Rep. Paulette Beaudoin submitted the bill. The Biddeford Democrat and others told the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee of incidents in which people have been injured and killed in chases, although in some cases they weren’t involved in the pursuits.
But the committee’s Senate chairman, Stanley Gerzofsky, said local, county and state police all do extensive training on pursuits.
The Brunswick Democrat said sufficient protocols are in place to manage chases that do occur.
Gerzofsky also said the number of chases has plummeted in Maine in recent years.
