AUGUSTA – Jack J. R. Smith, 76, a resident of Main Street in Jay, succumbed to cancer on Tuesday, March 3, at Maine General Medical Center.

He was born on May 19, 1932, in Dixfield, the son of John and Doris (Ross) Smith. He received his education in the Jay schools, graduating from Jay High School in 1950.

On June 27, 1952, he married his sweetheart, Christina Swett in East Wilton. He worked as a laster at Norwalk Shoe Co. in North Jay and later owned and operated Jack’s Variety Store in Jay for 22 years. He retired from Farmington Shoe Co. after 19 years of service.

He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing and looked forward to planting his garden every spring. Family was most important to him and he always enjoyed having friends stop by for a visit. He will always be remembered for his stories, sense of humor and his positive, loving and helping hands. Thank you dad and papa, you will always be in our hearts.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Christina of Jay; two daughters, Mavis Fitch and her husband, Bill, of Jay and Diane Nelson and her husband, Mike, of Jay; a son, Randy Smith and his wife, Lynn, of Jay; three sisters, Myrtle Allen, Inza Stanley and Beverly Cox and her husband, William, all of Jay; two brothers, Everett Smith and his wife, Joyce and Maurice Smith and his wife, Julie, also of Jay; grandchildren, Kelli Hanson, Dan Fitch, Nicole Smith, A.J. Nelson, Steve Nelson and Julie Nelson; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Faith Hanson.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Phillip and Arnold Smith.
