LEWISTON – Chase Delano scored six goals and two assists to send Middlebury to a commanding 14-6 victory over Bates in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Bobcats (1-1) regrouped for a 6-2 run in the final 26 minutes of the game following a daunting 11-0 halftime deficit. Caroline Thomas scored four goals and one assist during the run for Bates.

Delano extended the Panther’s (1-0) lead to 12-0 on her sixth goal early in the second half. But, Bates got on the board in the 36th minute when Avery Pierce dished to Thomas for the finish on a free-position attempt.

Middlebury 16, Bates 13

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Last season’s NESCAC Player of the Year, Mike Stone, began the 2009 season by scoring a game-high five goals to key Middlebury College to a 16-13 victory over Bates in men’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Trailing 2-1 in the first quarter, Stone collected a pair of goals, including a man-up tally for a 3-2 lead with 5:52 left.

The Bobcats (0-2) scored the next four goals, all unasssisted, by junior Nick Sampson, senior Tyler Moore, senior John Adams and sophomore Garrett Kopeski, to take their first of two three-goal leads at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter.

The Panthers (1-0) dominated the third quarter.

, holding the Bobcats scoreless while tacking on four goals. The Panthers tied the game at nine apiece when Tom Petty redirected a cross-crease pass.

Goalie Peter Britt got the win in goal for Middlebury, making 13 saves in the process, while Bates first-year Adam Scharff allowed 16 goals, stopping seven shots in the loss.
