LEWISTON – A cuckoo clock in the kitchen. Coasters in the living room. A mat at the front door.
Michele Vachon has found her decorating style: Mickey chic. The collector has put subtle touches of her favorite Disney character throughout the house and given Goofy, Minnie and pals full run of one guest bedroom.
She said her young grandkids playfully tease: “You like Mickey too much.”
Vachon and her husband, Ron, picked up their first Disney collectible about 20 years ago, after their first family vacation to Orlando and Disney World. It was a statue from Steamboat Willie, Mickey’s first movie, spotted at a store in Boothbay.
From there, they picked up figurines, snow globes, plates, drinking glasses and more. Her sister made Vachon a plate with an outline of Mickey Mouse ears, another friend made a quilt from Disney T-shirts and sweatshirts.
“Everybody just knows,” she said. “I watched somebody’s dog and they gave me a little gift, they got me this globe.”
(Their own little dog is named Nemo.)
In a guest bedroom, she’s hung framed park maps on the walls and covered a bed in Disney stuffed animals like Figment, Jiminy Cricket and Tigger. A nightstand has a Mickey phone and a box of Disney tissues that are not to be used; she hasn’t found a replacement box yet.
Their four grandchildren, who stay in that room when they visit, have Mickey stockings for Christmas and other toys. It’s the youngest, 2-year-old Brycin, who might just like Disney characters as much as his grandmother.
“I was really happy, ‘Yeah! I got the last one, finally,'” Vachon said.
She and Ron have gone to the Mouse House six or seven times, but it’s been three years since the last trip. They’ve got one on the calendar now for October.
“I said, ‘That’s it, I need to go, I can’t take it any longer,'” Vachon said. “It’s just so magical to me. When I go there, it’s like I’m in another world.”
