FARMINGTON – Police, firefighters and a town manager worked through an advanced-level National Incident Management System training session Friday at the Municipal Building.

The nationwide program prepares emergency workers for an organized response to a major incident, said Michael Grant, trainer from Maine Emergency Management Agency.

Groups prepared procedures for hypothetical incidents Friday afternoon to complete their accreditation for the advanced training.

The program trains for an efficient, coordinated command of an incident, Grant said.

Town managers and selectmen now take basic level NIMS training either online or in a class, said Tim Hardy, director of Franklin County Emergency Management.

Rangeley Town Manager Perry Ellsworth has gone a step further and attended all classes for the higher level training as well.

“I want to feel what they (the responders) feel,” Ellsworth said. “In Franklin County, we have a lot of volunteers who put in a lot of time for their towns and the county.”

Friday’s training also provided an opportunity for networking for mutual aid among departments, he said.

Participating in Friday’s training were fire departments from Wilton, Jay, Strong, Chesterville, Rangeley and Farmington, along with law officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Jay, Rangeley, Carrabassett Valley, Farmington and the University of Maine at Farmington. A representative from Franklin Memorial Hospital also participated.
