Indian Brook

Issue: Indian Brook can be counted on to flood across Shaw Hill Road almost every spring and any other time of year when the area experiences heavy rain.

The scoop: This Thursday, Town Administrator Arlan Saunders will attend the first of two workshops to start the process for a federal grant that will pay for a structure that should fix the problem. Saunders estimates that the grant will be in the $100,000 range.

New loader

Issue: On Saturday, town meeting voters approved the lease purchase of a new loader for $53,516 – to be paid in two $26,758 installments – plus trade-in of the town’s 2001 John Deere backhoe.

The scoop: Saunders said the backhoe is gone and the loader is in and working, and said he expects the paperwork from RC Hazelton of Cumberland soon. Selectmen authorized Saunders to sign the lease agreement and approved first payment of the lease, due at signing.

New town road

Issue: On Saturday, town meeting voters approved accepting Pleasant Drive as a town road.

The scoop: Saunders said the deed for Pleasant Drive had been signed and recorded. With acceptance of Pleasant Drive the town now maintains just under 65 miles of road, Saunders said.

Road postings

Issue: Heavy trucks and equipment damage roads softened and heaved by the season’s warm days and cold nights.

The scoop: As road commissioner, Saunders has restricted to heavy trucks and equipment from using town roads until further notice.

Up next: People wanting to run heavy equipment on town roads must contact Saunders at the town office for permits and sign a statement accepting responsibility for any damage.

Cable contract

Issue: At Saturday’s town meeting, voters approved establishing a cable contract renewal committee to consider issues that should be addressed in the contract with Time Warner Cable, set to be renewed in December.

The scoop: Selectmen named Jennifer Gagnon, William Perry, Carol Robinson and Christopher Woodford to serve on the town’s cable contract renewal committee.

Up next: The committee will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in the town office to gather public comment on what people would like to see in a new cable and Internet service contract.
