On January 20, Barack Obama took the Presidential oath and was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. To celebrate this day in history, Tripp Middle School students stopped what they were doing to watch his inauguration.

In my seventh grade class, our teacher, Mrs. Carrie Fichter, brought in a “2009 Inauguration” cake to celebrate the ceremony. While Obama gave his acceptance speech, my classmates and I listened to history in the making.

When Obama was sworn in, many noticed he stopped and waited for the section of the oath to be repeated. Obama did not forget the oath, but the person administering the oath mixed up the words and Obama didn’t know if he should state it the way he’d memorized it or repeat after the person. Just to be safe, Obama took the oath over in the White House.

History is made in 2009 as the first African American President takes office. We lived through history.
