PARIS – A Rumford man charged with aggravated assault twice last year was sentenced Monday to serve nearly two years in jail.

Thomas O. Culver, 32, of 318 Waldo St., pleaded guilty in Oxford County Superior Court to charges of Class B aggravated assault and Class C reckless conduct. Culver was accused of stabbing a 16-year-old boy in the arm in Rumford in August and hitting a 32-year-old Peru man in the head with a beer bottle in December.

A second charge of aggravated assault was dismissed.

Justice Andrew Horton ordered Culver to serve a straight sentence of 23 months in prison on the aggravated assault charge, with a concurrent sentence of one year on the reckless conduct charge.

The first incident occurred on the evening of Aug. 9 on Rangeley Place in Rumford. According to police, Culver was acquainted with the teen and got into an argument with him over an assault on a member of the teen’s family earlier that week.

The teen was treated for his injuries and released from Rumford Community Hospital. Culver was released on pretrial conditions, but a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to check in with his supervisor.

According to a report by Deputy George Cayer of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Culver struck 32-year-old Harold Reeve in the head with a beer bottle on Dec. 21 at Reeve’s residence on Auburn Road. Cayer stated that Reeve required 15 staples to close the wound.
