RUMFORD – Bertha Mary Horne, 93, of Dixfield died peacefully at the Rumford Community Home on March 13.

She was born in Rumford, on March 4, 1916, the daughter of Walter and Catherine (Gaudet) Gerrier. She graduated from Stephens High School in 1934, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.

On Jan. 23, 1936, she married Charles Herwood Horne. They enjoyed 66 happy years together. They raised their son and daughter in Mexico, and later moved to their home on Holt Hill in Dixfield.

She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Dr. Charles Lord, Oxford Paper Co. (where she issued the first Social Security numbers to mill employees in 1936), Thomas L. Dickson Logging, and the Maine Department of Transportation.

She loved to play cards, golf and traveling. She and Herwood spent many happy retirement years in Arizona, Florida, and Myrtle Beach.

She was a lovely, hard-working, frugal woman. She was very generous to her family, whom she dearly loved.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tim Bourassa of Mexico; her daughter-in-law, Jane Horne of Rumford; her brother, Eugene Gerrier and his wife, Marie, of North Ft. Myers, Fla.; a special niece, Judy Vienneau of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Kathy Horne of Mars Hill, N.C., Mike and Angie Horne of Richmond, Va., Jeannie and Tom Walsh of Medfield, Mass., Nicole and Pat Hornsby of Mexico, Erik Bourassa of Dixfield, and Beth Bourassa of Rumford; great-grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin Hornsby of Mexico, Kaylee Bourassa of Rumford, Anthony, Rachel and Tara Horne of Richmond, Va., and Kevin, Michael and Alison Walsh of Medfield, Mass.; three step-grandchildren, Todd and Shirley Bernard of Biddeford, Tracy and Steve Pinkham of Rumford Center, James Bernard of Rumford and Michelle Bernard of Rumford; sixstep-great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abby Pinkham of Rumford Center, Sam and Emily Bernard of Biddeford and Julia and Ali Bernard of Rumford.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Herwood in 2002; beloved son, Richard in 2006; sisters, Edna Hedger and Evelyn Tate; and brothers, Arthur, Edward and Wilfred Gerrier.
