LIVERMORE FALLS – Police say a 17-year-old Jay boy threatened a teacher with a knife Friday in SAD 36/Jay Crossroads behavioral program classroom at the Cedar Street Learning Complex.

The boy, who had been notified earlier in the day that he and another 17-year-old Jay boy were facing charges connected to the theft of two laptop computers from the school, went to the classroom and made a threat against a teacher and a knife was displayed, Livermore Falls police officer Steve Gould said.

The teenager fled the building and police caught up with him with the assistance of Jay police on Main Street in Jay, where he was taken into custody, he said.

The boy had the butterfly knife, considered a fighting knife, in his possession, Gould said. He was still at the police station late Friday afternoon.

The teacher involved came into the Central Office portion of the complex, where the SAD 36 superintendent office is located, and told them what happened, interim Assistant Superintendent Dave Bois said.

The other schools in that area were notified of the situation and told to lock the outside doors.

“When the teacher contacted us, she was as much concerned about the (boy) as about others,” Bois said. “Nobody was hurt and nobody was threatened to the point of being afraid.”

The boy involved in the threat incident was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon for that case, and with misdemeanor theft and selling stolen property for the computer theft case, Gould said.

The other 17-year-old boy was charged with felony theft in the computer case, he said. One of the laptops valued at $500 was recovered in good condition and the other will be recovered soon, Gould said.

Gould said he has been investigating the thefts of two Apple iBooks from a classroom cabinet at the center. The laptops had been put away in the behavioral classroom before Christmas vacation and a teacher noticed them missing when classes resumed.

Besides the behavioral program and central office, the center also houses adult education, the Progressive Learning Institute and Livermore Falls Head Start programs.
