ORONO (AP) – Inadequate ventilation is being blamed for sickening young swimmers, spectators and coaches last weekend at the 2009 Winter Combined Championship meet at the University of Maine.

The state’s chief public health officer said Friday someone should have notified emergency responders.

The statewide meet brought together about 600 swimmers from elementary school through high school age. It was held at the Wallace Pool inside the University of Maine field house.

Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said a lack of ventilation apparently caused unsafe levels of chlorine to build up in the pool enclosure. Complaints included eye irritation, respiratory congestion and coughing.

UMaine spokesman Joe Carr said Friday two large exhaust fans had been shut off at some point.
