HEBRON – Selectman James Reid said Tuesday he wants to be re-elected to a second three-year term to continue work on issues facing the town.
“We’ve got major expenses. Money’s tight,” said Reid, who lives on Brighton Hill Road.
One possibility the board would like to work on is to raise money to inventory land taken because of unpaid taxes in order to harvest wood on those properties.
“We’ve been trying to get the inventory. We’ve never cut it,” Reid said.
Reid said if the town can cut the wood to sell, it might be able to finance projects such as a building at the transfer station and a salt and sand shed.
He said it is estimated that as much as 15 percent of salt can leach out if it is not housed in a building. With salt prices escalating from $53 for a ton last year to $73 this past winter, the importance of protecting salt supplies is increasing.
Reid said if he is re-elected, he also hopes to address some unfinished business, such as writing an employee handbook that will better detail issues such as vacation time and insurance.
In other election action, voters will choose a town clerk and treasurer/collector, positions Joan Clough of Paris Road has held since 1975.
Voters will elect a Moody Library trustee for the three-year term held by longtime trustee Janette Packard of Station Road, and a SAD 17 director for the three-year term held by Katherine Rideout of Old County Road. Rideout was elected two years ago to complete an unexpired term and is hoping to be elected Saturday to her first three-year term.
The annual town meeting gets under way at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hebron Station School. The town has 842 votes.
