OTISFIELD – Selectmen recommended several upgrades to the town’s three fire stations Wednesday after hearing a presentation by a Fire Department captain.
The requests are part of the Fire Department budget that will be voted on at the annual town meeting in June. Selectmen recommended that several of the items be addressed immediately.
“There are some items in there that are energy-saving,” Jared Damon said. “There are also some safety concerns.”
The stations are on Route 121 in East Otisfield, Gore Road, and Spurr’s Corner, also on Route 121.
Damon said the Spurr’s Corner station is in better condition than the other two, but still needs extensive work. He said the biggest priority is replacing the lighting in the truck bay. Other requests include new windows, expanding and repaving the parking area, and replacing the roof surface.
Damon said the Gore Road station needs regrading of the driveway to prevent flooding and icing in front of the bay doors. It also requires roof work and the installation of signs along the road alerting drivers to the station.
The requests for the East Otisfield station includes the parking area and installing snow guards over the entry to prevent falling snow.
Damon said some work, including painting, could be done by firefighters at no cost to the town.
Selectmen recommended that some upgrades, including those related to safety, be done immediately. Chairman Hal Ferguson said a septic tank at the Spurr’s Corner station should be pumped immediately to prevent contamination of the leach field.
Other upgrades that the board recommended be done right away include oil supply line protection at all stations, installation of road signs on Gore Road, snow guards at the East Otisfield station, and repair of a grill cord at Spurr’s Corner.
The estimated cost of the immediate upgrades is $1,505 for the Gore Road station, $1,000 for the East Otisfield station, and $900 for the Spurr’s Corner station.
