FARMINGTON – A Wilton man pleaded not guilty Friday in connection to the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son last November in Wilton.
David Cook, 26, of Wilton, was indicted on a charge of manslaughter Wednesday in the death of Matteo Hanson on Nov. 29 at the child’s mother’s apartment while he was watching the children. Brandy S. Swett, the mother, was at work at the time.
Cook told police the boy fell down a flight of stairs, possibly pushed by a young sibling while they were in his care.
However, a state medical examiner who performed an autopsy on Hanson said the boy died from extensive blunt force trauma to the torso, consistent with being severely kicked or punched.
The manslaughter conviction carries a penalty of up to 30 years in jail.
Defense attorney Josh Robbins and Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson said the case would not be ready to go to trial in May.
Justice Michaela Murphy put the case on the October trial list.
Cook remains in the Franklin County jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 worth of real estate.
In a related matter, Jamie Badeau, 24, of Wilton, pleaded not guilty to aggravated forgery, her attorney, Linda Sparks said. Badeau, who was also indicted Wednesday, put her Wilton property up to bail Cook out of jail earlier this year, but it was found to be held as collateral in a bank loan and didn’t meet bail requirements.
