PORTLAND (AP) – The president of the Maine State Troopers Association is going to serve as chairman of the National Troopers Coalition.

Sgt. Michael Edes told the Portland Press Herald he was competing with the president of the Illinois troopers and won Monday’s balloting by two votes.

He’ll lead the national umbrella group representing 45,000 state troopers on national issues.

The job is a volunteer position. Edes will continue his assignment with the Maine state police as a road patrol sergeant working out of the Gray barracks covering Androscoggin, Cumberland and Oxford counties.

Edes has been a trooper for 23 years and is now in his sixth term as president of the Maine State Troopers Association.
