WILTON – Four thefts and three break-ins in homes and vehicles over the past 10 days are prompting the Police Department to ask for the public’s help.
Police Chief Dennis Brown said Friday that his department is investigating four thefts of property, and one home and two vehicle burglaries.
Someone entered an unlocked home on Main Street in East Wilton on Monday and stole a .22 caliber pistol and a flat screen television, he said.
On Tuesday, someone stole $40 in fuel and the gas cap from an unlocked vehicle in a driveway on the Welch Road.
And on Wednesday, an Xbox was taken from a residence on the Weld Road near Washington Plantation.
Two vehicles were burglarized March 11, he said. Someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway on Depot Street and attempted to remove a Sirius Satellite Radio System. Another unlocked vehicle parked at Food City on Main Street was entered and a tan shoulder bag, which contained a large amount of cash, identification cards and a gold ring, was taken. The ring has green stones and diamonds on the band. An inscription on the inside of the band reads “I love you,” Brown said.
In addition to these crimes, the department is seeing an increase in checks drawn on closed accounts or having insufficient funds, he said.
Residents are being reminded to lock doors and windows when they are not home, develop a neighborhood watch system and ask police to check their property when they are away.
Brown also advises people to remove valuables from unattended cars or lock them in the trunk, lock their vehicles and park them close to their homes.
Brown said the department is working to solve these crimes but help from residents is appreciated and not considered a bother, even if it is to report a barking dog at night, he said. Many crimes are witnessed by a neighbor or passer-by who does not report the suspicious activity, he said.
