MEXICO – At least 25 firefighters from two local departments responded to an apartment blaze Sunday afternoon in Mexico.
Chief Gary Wentzell of the Mexico Fire Department said the fire started just before 4 p.m. in the kitchen of a second-floor front apartment in a three-story, six-unit building. He said the apartment was rented by Jasmine Colon, who lived there with her boyfriend and a 1-year-old child. All three went to stay with family in the Jay area, according to Wentzell, because there was smoke and water damage to the apartment.
Wentzell said the blaze appears to have started as a grease fire and caused $4,000 to $5,000 in damage to the building, which is owned by Ryan Wiley. While most damage was contained to the apartment, Wentzell said there was also minor water damage to the first floor, front apartment.
