Marketing students bring home awards

PARIS – In keeping with National DECA’s 2008-09 slogan, “Make Your Mark in DECA,” 20 students from Oxford Hills Technical School’s DECA/Marketing Program made their mark at the state competition held in South Portland on March 5 and 6.

Thirteen members placed first or second overall in their categories, which qualified them to attend and compete at the National DECA Conference to be held in Anaheim, Calif., from April 28 to May 3.

Two members, Krista Hakala and Kayla Turner, campaigned for positions as officers on the State DECA Action Team for the 2009/10 school year and were elected. For the 13th out of the last 15 years, Oxford Hills was named Maine’s Outstanding DECA Chapter.

The following is a list of the awards members won in their categories.

Individual events

Melissa McLaren, apparel and accessories, second place, test; first, role play 1; second, role play 2; first overall.

Trisha Mitchell, hotel and lodging, third, test; first, role play 1; third, role play 2; third overall.

Mikenzi Merrill, food marketing, second, test; first, role play 1; first, role play 2; first overall.

Kendra Davis, retail merchandising, first, test; first, role play 1; first, role play 2; first overall.

Chelsea Gould, quick serve restaurant management, third, test; third, role play 1; third, role play 2; third overall.

Zachary Smith and Zachary Surette, Internet marketing, both tied for first, test; first, case study; first overall.

Lauren Brett and Madeline Littlefield, financial analysis, Madeline, third, test; third, case study; third overall.

Krista Hakala and Meagan McDougal, travel and tourism, Krista, second, test; first, case study; first overall.

Kersten Curtis and Abbey Begley, business law and ethics, tied first, test; first, case study; first overall.

Marisa Hanning and Leslie Grover, buying and merchandising, third, case study; third overall.

Students receiving certificates of excellence were Kendra Davis, Arielle Floyd, Krista Hakala, Meagan McDougal, Kayla Turner and Abbey Begley. This means that they met competency in all of their competitive events.
