Dear Sun Spots: A family member has recently had a fire with her home and all contents a complete loss. The family members have retrieved a washer and dryer that possibly could be reusable if the fire and water damage, or should I say smoke and water damage, could be removed by using some sort of a recommended cleaner for this purpose. Any recommended cleaner or method of doing this would be greatly appreciated. Please call 782-5802. Thank you. – C.B.C., Auburn.

Answer: Sun Spots corresponded with professional cleaners who offer fire, water and smoke restoration services. They noted that the exterior and interior of the appliances can easily be cleaned, but cautioned that with these types of damage, there is a possibility there may be soot or other residue in the motor, which could create many problems down the road, including contaminating your laundry when using the appliance.

It would be worth calling your appliance repairman, who should be able to get to the inside of the machine for cleaning. In the end, you may be better off replacing the appliances.

Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for a twin size reversible comforter that was sold through the JC Penney or Sears catalogue about 20 years ago. The comforter has a white background with big splotches of lilacs and green leaves on one side and smaller individual lilac colored flowers on the reverse side. It also has a 3½-inch white eyelet edging around three sides.

The catalogue also offered matching sheet sets, pillow shams, a bed skirt and wallpaper. If anyone has a comforter in good condition that they would be willing to sell at a reasonable price, I would like to match the one I already have because the room now has two twin-sized beds in it. A bed skirt and pillow sham are optional.

My phone number is 645-3534. Thanks for all the help that Sun Spots provides. You have answered my requests several times. I don’t know what the community would do without you. – V.S., No Town.
