Chess club has first competition

LISBON – The Lisbon Community School Chess Club competed for the first time in the State Scholastic Chess Championships on March 7, held at the University of Maine in Orono.

The tournament was divided into two levels, Championship and Novice, for fourth, fifth and sixth graders.

At the Championship level, Jacob Fusaro and Mitchell Garrant each won one of their four games. Garrant also tied in one game and was awarded half a point. Coach Brian Hirst plans to have a full five-person team for the level next year.

At the Novice level, Gage Williams, Matthew Moran, Kurtis Bolton and Joshua Huston finished third out of nine teams.

“All team members did very well, especially since this was their first competition against any students from other schools. This is also only the second year chess has been offered at Lisbon Community School,” said Hirst.
