PARIS – A man charged with murder in a brutal killing in Bethel was moved to Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Friday after his third fight with inmates at the Oxford County Jail.
Agostino J. Samson, 23, of Bethel and Windham, had facial abrasions, was spitting up blood and complained that his eyes were injured, said Capt. Ernest Martin, administrator of the Oxford County Jail.
Samson was treated at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway before his transfer to Auburn.
He is charged with murder in the beating and strangulation death of his former employer, 25-year-old landscaper Scott Libby of Raymond, during a confrontation last month.
Martin said Samson was involved in a fight in the day room of the maximum security block around 11 a.m. Friday. It was the third fight he had been involved in, and the first that resulted in injuries, since his incarceration March 4, Martin said.
“He’s worn out his welcome,” Martin said. “Basically, he doesn’t get along with the other inmates in that block and they don’t get along with him.”
Martin said another inmate, 23-year-old Joshua Pollis of Mexico, also suffered facial abrasions in the scuffle Friday. Pollis has been indicted on charges of robbery, theft and criminal mischief related to the attempted theft of a cash register and purse from a Big Apple store in January.
Martin said the jail’s administrative segregation unit for troublesome inmates was occupied by women and the Androscoggin County Jail is better equipped to separate people. He said the transfer should be done at no charge, and he has offered to take a troublesome inmate from the Androscoggin jail if officials are willing.
“Sometimes a change of environment is all it takes,” he said.
Martin said the fighting incident will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office on Monday to determine whether additional charges should be brought against Samson or other inmates. He said Samson claimed that he was a victim in the fight, but admitted to calling another inmate a rat.
“It was like a consensus of opinion that he was the problem,” Martin said. “(Other inmates) say he threw the first punch.”
Libby – Samson’s alleged victim – was found dead in his car, which had been parked on the railroad tracks in Bethel and was struck by a slow-moving train at about 3 a.m. on Feb. 20. The Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Libby had been strangled and struck with a blunt object.
According to a state police affidavit, Libby went to Bethel the night of Feb. 19 to meet Samson, who was repaying Libby $400 he had loaned Samson more than a year ago. Samson told police he punched Libby in the nose twice after Libby made sexual advances toward him.
Libby’s body was found less than a mile from the Bethel Hostel on Route 2 where Samson was living at the time and where the two met the night of Feb. 19, according to police.
