PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A federal judge says he will decide soon whether to allow a class-action lawsuit to move forward against the Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain over a data breach that exposed more than 4 million crdit and debit card numbers to computer hackers.

Judge D. Brock Hornby heard arguments Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland.

The Portland Press Herald said attorneys for the plaintiffs told Hornby he should certify the case, while Hannaford attorneys asked that the complaint be dismissed.

Between Dec. 7, 2007, and March 10, 2008, hackers accessed card numbers used at 165 Hannaford stores in the Northeast and 106 Sweetbay stores in Florida. At least 1,800 numbers were stolen and used for unauthorized purchases.

More than 20 lawsuits against Hannaford were consolidated and assigned to a federal court in Maine.
