AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A legislative committee has rejected a dime tax on plastic bags used by consumers in Maine, but it wants to look further into ways to reduce the volume of bags that wind up in landfills.
The Natural Resources Committee said no to Sen. John Nutting’s bill that would have required the fees. The money would have gone to recycling programs.
The Portland Press Herald says the committee instead is recommending to the full Legislature creation of a working group that includes supermarket chains and other businesses to find ways to reduce plastic bag use. Nutting, a Leeds Democrat, said he’s pleased with the committee’s action.
Measures to impose taxes on plastic bags have surfaced in states and cities across the country.
