LEWISTON – New Beginnings and WMCA Health Services are hosting the AIDS Walk Lewiston-Auburn on Saturday, May 2, to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and support prevention programming. The local walk is part of a larger effort taking place across northern New England.
The two-mile route through Lewiston will begin and end at New Beginnings’ Main Street administrative office.
“There hasn’t been an AIDS Walk in this community in quite a few years,” said Nancy Audet, WMCA Health Services program manager.
In Maine, there are more than 1,200 people living with HIV, and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there may be nearly 400 more people who are infected without knowing it. There are people living with HIV in every county in Maine, but Androscoggin County is one of four counties with an HIV rate higher than the statewide average.
