PORTLAND (AP) – A meeting between officials from Old Orchard Beach and Saco has failed to resolve a dispute over which municipality has zoning jurisdiction over the waters off Old Orchard Beach.

The issue surfaced in 2007 when Saco signed a lease with a developer seeking to place a floating marina in the waters. Old Orchard Beach pushed legislation that backs its claim, but lawmakers sought to have the communities work out the dispute themselves.

The Portland Press Herald said Saco officials suggested a commission to oversee offshore matters. Old Orchard Beach officials said they’d think about the plan but want the border set in the meantime.

Saco’s claim to the waters dates to when Old Orchard Beach split from Saco more than a century ago.
