NEW VINEYARD – A Wilton businesswoman on her way to work Thursday morning suffered severe head injuries in an all-terrain vehicle accident, a state official said.
Wilma Touchette, 65, co-owner of Shirt Tales, was in a Lewiston hospital Thursday night. Information about her condition was unavailable.
Touchette left her home for her shop, Shirt Tales, at about 8:10 a.m., said Deb Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Warden Service. Touchette was driving an Arctic Cat ATV on a muddy private road leading from her house to her parked car on Pratt Mountain Road, Turcotte said.
Touchette apparently was trying to avoid a pothole that formed in the road overnight when her machine rolled over, throwing her off, Turcotte said. She said Touchette was not wearing a helmet.
Her husband, Ronald, found her about 45 minutes later as he drove down the road to join her at the business, Turcotte said.
He called for help, and NorthStar ambulance arrived to take her to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. She was then flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
The Maine Warden Service was called at 9:08 a.m., Turcotte said, and Warden Dan Christianson investigated.
