BAR HARBOR (AP) – College of the Atlantic and benefactor Clare Stone are announcing the creation of the Allan Stone Chair in the Visual Arts.

The chair honors Allan Stone, a gallery owner, collector and art advocate who was a longtime supporter of the college in Bar Harbor before his death in December 2006.

Clare Stone announced her family’s $1 million lead gift to establish the chair at a reception held last summer at the Stones

Seal Harbor home. Recently $500,000 was given anonymously and fundraising is under way for an additional $1 million to complete the endowment.

The college is searching for an art historian with experience in studio arts to fill the position.
