PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Northern New England states are near the top in a new ranking of the states by breweries per capita.

According to the Brewers Association, Vermont has one brewery for every 33,000 residents, making it No. 1 on the list.

Maine was fourth, with one brewery for every 42,000 people. New Hampshire was 11th, with one brewery for every 88,000 residents.

Most of the region’s beers are specialty brews that are typically made in small regional or local breweries.

The Colorado-based Brewers Association on Monday also released its annual rankings for the nation’s top 50 craft brewing companies and the top 50 overall beer companies.
