PARIS — Maine State Police have identified the Oxford County Jail inmate who died after collapsing at the jail Wednesday as 35-year-old Steven Perrault of Mexico. Perrault was in jail on four outstanding warrants from 2008.

Sheriff Wayne Gallant said a PACE Ambulance crew was called to the jail and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the Perrault before transporting him to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta conducted an autopsy Thursday, but a spokesperson there said the cause of Perrault’s death was pending further studies.

Several lab tests must be completed before the final cause of death will be known. That could take several months, the spokesperson said.

State Police detectives are investigating the death, along with jail officials, which is protocol whenever a person dies in custody in Maine, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.
