AUGUSTA (AP) – An alcohol and drug counselor in the midcoast region and his wife have been handed prison sentences after pleading guilty to stealing from Maine’s Medicaid and unemployment compensation programs.
Attorney General Janet Mills said David McFarland bilked the state by submitting false claims to MaineCare. Mills said Mary McFarland illegally collected jobless benefits after she purportedly resigned from her husband’s counseling agency but continued to work for the agency from the couple’s home.
David McFarland was sentenced Friday in Knox County Superior Court to nine months imprisonment and 300 hours of community service. Mary McFarland received a suspended three-year sentence, three years of probation and 400 hours of community service.
